The Ruby Project is a 501(c)3 youth organization that promotes the overall health and success of teen girls (ages 13-18) everywhere through retreats, the performing arts, an interactive online community, and other efforts. The Ruby Project reaches out espcially to teen girls in crisis (i.e. rape, abuse, victims of sexual crime) and those trying to overcome a personal challenge (ie. poor self-esteem/body-image, bullying, drug use, a parent's addiction, loss of a loved one, etc.), but welcomes all girls into its program.
We believe that a young woman’s knowledge and understanding of her self-worth is so important to her physical and emotional well-being and to her general approach to life. Our goal is therefore to help teen girls realize their true worth, and to live like they know just how Ruby-rare they are!
At the Ruby Project we:
Chinyere Peace Amadi received her BA in psychology from UCLA and her M.A and doctorate in psychology (Psy.D) from Azusa Pacific University. From mentoring disadvantaged youth in Los Angeles and Philadelphia, working with WORLD IMPACT to rebuild run-down homes, living in an orphanage in the Phillipines to help care for abandoned children with Global Urban Trek, and offering her vocal talents in live performances to raise awareness of social justice issues, Peace has always lived by her conviction to 'put others above one's self'. In 2007, Peace became the reigning Miss Nigeria in America and pioneered a diabetes awareness campaign among the African community. As a part of the campaign, Peace spearheaded "Team Nigeria"- a group of American-based Nigerians participating in a marathon bicycle race used to raise funds for the American Diabetes Association. Peace fully believes that a calling is "the place where ones deep gladness meets the worlds deepest need" and hopes to integrate her professional expertise, community-mindedness, and creative gifts as she continues to discover her own.
Leslie Oluchi Nwoke received her M.D. from Ross University School of Medicine, her Masters in Public Health (MPH) from George Washington University, and her BS in biology from Spelman College. In 2004, Leslie was crowned as the inaugural Miss Nigeria in America with a platform on womens health. Leslie's community health efforts and research have been far-reaching: She has worked with TAMPEP (Italy), assisting in the rehabilitation of Nigerian sex trafficking victims, served as a medical volunteer in Honduras, worked with Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance, and has provided the voice for an anti-smoking documentary based in Nigeria. Leslie and her husband also direct the non-profit organization Making Noise (livethenoise.com) which uses arts and social media to raise awareness of social justice issues facing Africans. Leslie's motivation in her work comes from her belief in Proverbs 31:8- Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.

*Cora was only 14. But she had already been through so much in her life. For years she had witnessed her alcoholic father beat her sister and couldn't do much about it. In fact, when she tried, she too would catch one of his blows. Cora began to live with fear, never knowing what her father would do next, never knowing when he would go too far. Cora also lived with shame; when Cora was in elementary school, her older brother's best friend slept over one night and took advantage of her. Too scared to scream, Cora laid there silently pleading for him to stop. Cora's shame kept her from telling anybody.
Though Cora tried to mentally block out all these memories, they still affected her. She lost her drive to do well in school, she entertained sexual relationships with much older men, and she pushed down all her painful feelings with alcohol and XTC. Cora had accepted a belief that she was nothing and that people could and would treat her how ever they wanted.
It wasn't until Cora began to understand her self-worth that she began to heal. It wasn't until she saw how the drugs and sex were only band-aids, not solutions, and found healthier ways to express her pain, that she began to grow. And it wasn't until she started treating herself better, and teaching others how to treat her the way she deserved, that she began to feel whole. You see, Cora had finally realized that she...was a Ruby.
